BOC exam cost, two fees, then a yearly one
As of Oct 2026 a first attempt costs $450 for NATA members and $475 for everyone else. You pay it in two parts at two different moments: the application fee when you apply, the exam fee when you register for a window.

The member discount sits on the application only, a $25 difference; the exam fee is the same for members and nonmembers. Prep books, courses and the board’s own practice exams are extra and optional.
If you need a second try
A retake is the exam fee alone, $375, because no new application is due within a year of your results. The rule: unlimited for 1 year, registering each time for the next open window. Let the year lapse and you apply again under the rules then in force, application fee included. Your state board may limit attempts on its own, so check before you plan several.
Changing or canceling a date
- Rescheduling: $45 to move within the same window (through Meazure Learning), $50 to move to another window before you schedule, $100 after you schedule. The cheapest move stays inside the same window.
- Never scheduling: registering and then not booking a seat adds $50.
- Refunds: cancel in writing before you schedule a seat: 50% of the exam fee back; after scheduling, at least two business days ahead: 25%; later, or a no-show: nothing. The application fee is never refunded.
- Emergencies: after a missed exam, an appeal for documented reasons such as serious illness or military call-up can move the fee to a later window.
Testing outside the US and Canada
Price: $495 outside the US and Canada ($375 + $120 surcharge). The handbook’s fee table prints $490 for the same line, an arithmetic slip, while the candidates page shows $495. It applies to International Arrangement candidates testing in Ireland, the UK or Spain; graduates of a CAATE program test in the US or Canada and pay the standard fee.
Veterans
Recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2002, so veterans may be eligible for exam-fee reimbursement under the GI Bill. The claim goes through the VA, not the board (GI Bill: licensing and certification).
After you pass: the yearly fee
Certification costs $50 / $65 a year (NATA member / nonmember), and the fee is waived the year you certify. Two other costs come with keeping the credential: ECC certification kept current throughout the reporting period, and the continuing education you need for renewal (recertification).
